Insta opportune, importune

Strident political correctness is embarked on a full-bore campaign to conquer the public square, as observed by op-ed articles appearing over the past week in the Washington Post and in the New York Times.

What is to be a Christian’s response?  Shall we, as demanded by thought leaders in the majority, submit to the putative mainstream of public opinion?

Facing martyrdom, here was what the Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy on that question (2 Tim 4:1-5, Douay-Rheims):

I charge thee, before God and Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead, by his coming, and his kingdom: Preach the word: be instant in season, out of season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience and doctrine. For there shall be a time, when they will not endure sound doctrine; but, according to their own desires, they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears: And will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. But be thou vigilant, labour in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy ministry. Be sober.

In this we are charged with no less than the mission of Our Lord Himself, Whose earthly reward was death on a Cross but Whose Love, of which we are but unworthy instruments, extends to all.  May we ever seek the grace to accept His Will and ever trust in His Divine Mercy.
