Lauda, Jerusalem! Charles Town Canons to celebrate two ordinations in October

On Saturday morning, October 17, at 10:00 am, two brothers of the Canons Regular of the New Jerusalem will join the Very Reverend Prior Daniel Augustine Oppenheimer CRNJ as priests of the Charles Town, West Virginia, monastic community.

Dom John Berchmans Tonkin CRNJ and Dom Alban Baker CRNJ will be ordained to the sacred priesthood of Jesus Christ at the hands of the Right Reverend Athanasius Schneider ORC, Auxiliary Bishop of Astana, Kazakhstan, during a traditional Mass of Ordination in the presence and with the approval of their Ordinary, the Most Reverend Michael J. Bransfield, Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston. The ordinations will be celebrated at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 49 Crosswinds Drive, Charles Town. A reception will follow.

On each of the two days following, a public First Mass in the Extraordinary Form will be celebrated by one of the new ordinands at the Priory of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 301 South George Street, Charles Town. Dom John Berchmans will celebrate a First Mass on Sunday morning, October 18, at 10:15 am. On Monday evening, October 19, Dom Alban will celebrate a First Mass at 7:30 pm.

First Masses set for FSSP ordinands

Rev. Fr. Daniel Heenan and Rev. Fr. Zachary Akers, who were ordained on Saturday at St. John the Apostle Church in Leesburg by Bishop James Conley of the Diocese of Lincoln as priests of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, will each be celebrating several First Masses as prescribed in the Rite of Ordination.

Father Heenan will celebrate his First Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, June 15, at 9:30 am at Christ the King Chapel of Christendom College in Front Royal, Virginia.  Other First Masses to be offered by Fr. Heenan:

Father Akers will celebrate his First Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, June 15, at 12:30 pm at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Front Royal, Virginia.  Other First Masses to be offered by Fr. Akers:

  • Monday, June 16, 7:00 pm, Our Lady of Angels Church, Woodbridge
  • Tuesday, June 17, 10:30 am, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel), Washington
  • Thursday, June 19, 7:30 pm, St. Mary Mother of God Church, Washington
  • Sunday, June 22, 11:00 am, St. Joseph Church, Richmond, Va.

Father Heenan will celebrate his first Mass on Sunday, June 15, at 9:30AM at the Chapel of Christ the King, Christendom College, Front Royal, VA, and Father Akers will celebrate his first Mass at 12:30PM at the Church of Saint John the Baptist, also in Front Royal, VA.

Two FSSP priests to be ordained Saturday at Leesburg St. John

Transitional deacons Zachary Akers and Daniel Heenan will receive the sacrament of Holy Orders as priests of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter on Saturday, June 14, at St. John the Apostle Church in Leesburg, Virginia.

The rite of ordination will take place during Solemn High Mass, which will be celebrated by Bishop James Conley of the Diocese of Lincoln beginning at 9:00 am. Bishop Paul Loverde of the Diocese of Arlington will be in attendance.

This Mass, which is open to the public, has been added to our seven-day calendar.
