After Christmas hiatus, Sunday Vespers to resume January 4 at D.C. Oratory

The Oratorian Fathers of the Community of St. Philip Neri, currently in formation at Washington’s St. Thomas Apostle Church, have announced that, after a one-week break during the octave of Christmas, the Community will resume public celebration of Solemn Vespers and Benediction on Sunday afternoons beginning in January 2015.

Vespers, the evening prayer of the Church’s Divine Office, will not be scheduled for Sunday, December 28, the Sunday in the Octave of the Nativity, but will resume each Sunday at 4:00 pm beginning on Sunday, January 4.  The service is sung entirely in Gregorian chant; those interested in participating are encouraged to assist in the preparation of the music beginning at 3:30 pm. After Vespers, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed briefly for adoration and Benediction.

St. Thomas Apostle Church is located at 2665 Woodley Road in Woodley Park, one block up from the Woodley Road Metrorail and Metrobus stops at Connecticut Avenue.

Saturday Solemn Vespers, Benediction set at Holy Comforter-St. Cyprian

Solemn Vespers followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will be held at Washington’s Holy Comforter-St. Cyprian Church on Saturday, November 15, at 7:00 pm.

Father James Bradley of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham will be the celebrant. The musical accompaniment will be Claudio Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers, performed by the Third Practice vocal ensemble with Gregorian antiphons sung by Chorus Sine Nomine under the direction of Brian Bartoldus. Included in the program will be a newly commissioned setting of the Litany of Saints by Dr. Joshua Bornfield.

Vespers, the evening prayer of the Church’s Divine Office, will begin each Sunday at 4:00 pm beginning on Sunday, October 5.  The service is sung entirely in Gregorian chant; those interested in participating are encouraged to assist in the preparation of the music beginning at 3:30 pm.

Fr. Scalia to celebrate EF Vespers, Benediction at Alexandria St. Mary

On Sunday, March 30 (Laetare Sunday), at historic St. Mary Church in Alexandria, Father Paul Scalia, bishop’s delegate for clergy of the Diocese of Arlington, will be the celebrant for Solemn Vespers in the Extraordinary Form and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament at 7:00 p.m., with a reception to follow.

St. Mary Church is located at 310 South Royal Street in Old Town Alexandria.
