Baltimore St. Alphonsus to welcome Fr. Kiefer at Sunday post-TLM social

A social will be held at the National Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Baltimore after the 11:30 am Traditional Latin Mass this coming Sunday, August 6, to welcome new pastor Reverend Father Joel Kiefer to the parish. Father Kiefer, a member of the Priestly Society of St. Peter, assumed pastoral duties at the Shrine this past Tuesday, August 1, succeeding interim administrator Reverend Father William Spacek of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

The Shrine, located at 114 West Saratoga Street in downtown Baltimore, now offers the Traditional Latin Mass every Sunday at 11:30 am and every weekday at 7:00 am. These Masses are listed on our seven-day schedule.

Daily Traditional Mass to begin Tuesday at Baltimore St. Alphonsus

Beginning this Tuesday, August 1, the regularly scheduled 7:00 am Mass at the National Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Baltimore will be a Traditional Latin Low Mass. The introduction of the TLM at the weekday morning Mass was announced this morning by Reverend Father William Spacek, whose term as interim parish administrator ends July 31.

The 7:00 am Traditional Mass will be offered by incoming pastor Reverend Father Joel Kiefer of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. For the time being, it is anticipated that the regularly scheduled 12:10 pm weekday Mass will continue to be an English Novus Ordo offered by a priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Also, the faithful are reminded that this Wednesday, August 2, is the Feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori, the parish’s patron. A visit to any church on its patronal feast day, accompanied by the recitation of one Our Father and the Creed, is enriched with a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions.

The National Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori is located at 114 West Saratoga Street in downtown Baltimore. Parking is available nearby in metered spaces, on surface lots, and in garages. There is no charge for street parking before 8:00 am on weekdays; however, motorists are cautioned not to park on the south side of Saratoga Street, or on Park Avenue north of Saratoga Street, during weekday morning rush hours from 7:00 am to 9:00 am. MTA bus service runs frequently on Saratoga Street and on nearby Cathedral Street.

Fr. Kiefer FSSP to become pastor of Baltimore St. Alphonsus

Parish to remain under diocesan jurisdiction

It was announced today that Reverend Father Joel Kiefer of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP) will become the pastor of the National Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Baltimore effective August 1, 2017. The announcement was made during Holy Mass at St. Alphonsus on Sunday morning, July 9, by Reverend Father William Spacek, who will remain as parochial administrator for the remainder of the month of July.

The appointment of Fr. Kiefer ensures that Baltimore Catholics will continue to have permanent access to the Traditional Mass and Sacraments at St. Alphonsus after the retirement earlier this year of Reverend Monsignor Arthur Bastress. In addition, a priest will be appointed to offer the Novus Ordo Mass to the English- and Lithuanian-speaking parishioners of St. Alphonsus. The parish will remain within the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Fr. Kiefer, a 1992 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, previously served as pastor of the Fraternity’s North American Martyrs parish in Seattle.
