Sung Masses, Saturday Morning of Recollection set at St. Thomas Apostle

On Wednesday morning, September 14, a Missa Cantata in the Extraordinary Form for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross will be celebrated at 7:00 am at Washington’s St. Thomas Apostle Church.

On Saturday morning, September 17, the Oratorian Community of St. Philip Neri in Washington will conduct a Morning of Recollection at St. Thomas Apostle Church for the Feast of the Stigmata of St. Francis Assisi. Saturday morning’s program includes the following events:

  • Missa Cantata in the Extraordinary Form at 8:30 am, with an opportunity for Confession beginning at 8:00 am
  • Breakfast in the Parish Hall at 9:45 am
  • A spiritual conference in the Parish Hall at 10:15 am
  • Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament (with an opportunity for Confession) at 10:45 am
  • Benediction at 11:45 am
  • Mass in the Ordinary Form at noon, followed by the Perpetual Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

All are welcome to attend. There is no charge for any of the day’s events. Wednesday’s and Saturday’s Masses have been added to our seven-day schedule.

St. Barnabus Day Morning of Recollection to be conducted Saturday at St. Thomas Apostle

The Oratorian Community of St. Philip Neri in Washington will conduct a Morning of Recollection at St. Thomas Apostle Church in Woodley Park on the Feast of St. Barnabus, Apostle, Saturday, June 11.

Saturday morning’s program includes the following events:

Oratorians, FSSP seminarians to celebrate Vespers and Benediction Sunday at St. Thomas Apostle

The Oratorian Fathers of the Community of St. Philip Neri, currently in formation at Washington’s St. Thomas Apostle Church, will conduct their weekly service of Solemn Vespers and Benediction in the Extraordinary Form this Sunday, June 5, at 4:00 pm.

The liturgy will be conducted by Oratorian and secular associate clergy led by community Moderator Reverend Monsignor Andrew Wadsworth, accompanied this week by visiting seminarians of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP). Assistance to the clergy and seminarians will be provided by the Brothers of the Little Oratory led by Brother Rector Jeff Bedia. Choral accompaniment will be provided by the Vespers schola of St. Thomas Apostle Church directed by Vincent Bury. The public is encouraged to attend and to join in the singing of the traditional evening prayer of the Church’s Divine Office.

St. Thomas Apostle, home of Sunday EF Vespers, to offer Missa Cantata for Corpus Christi

A Sung Mass will be offered for the Feast of Corpus Christi at 7:00 am this Thursday morning, May 26, at Washington’s St. Thomas Apostle Church. While Corpus Christi is not a holy day of obligation in the United States, it is still observed on its traditional date in the Extraordinary Form.

Every Sunday at 4:00 pm, the office of Vespers is celebrated at St. Thomas Apostle by the Oratorian Community of St. Philip Neri according to the 1961 Roman Breviary. The service, sung entirely in Gregorian chant, is one of the few weekly public celebrations of the traditional Office on the Eastern Seaboard. Everyone interested in participating is encouraged to assist in the preparation of the music beginning at 3:30 pm. After Vespers, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed briefly for adoration and Benediction.

The Oratorian Community of St. Philip Neri in Washington announces that a Lenten Morning of Recollection will be conducted at St. Thomas Apostle Church in Woodley Park on Saturday, February 20.

A Solemn High Mass will be offered for the Feast of the Epiphany at 7:00 pm this Wednesday evening, January 6, at Washington’s St. Thomas Apostle Church. Once a holy day of obligation in the United States, Epiphany celebrates the discovery of the Christ Child by the Magi and is the traditional close of the season of Christmastide in the Roman Catholic Church.

Msgr. Wadsworth to celebrate solemn 25th anniversary ordination Mass Wednesday at St. Thomas Apostle

A Missa Solemnis for the Feast of St. Jerome will be celebrated at 7:00 pm this Wednesday evening, September 30, at Washington’s St. Thomas Apostle Church by Reverend Monsignor Andrew Wadsworth in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood.

Msgr. Wadsworth, who was ordained to the sacred priesthood of Jesus Christ on September 30, 1990, is assistant pastor of St. Thomas Apostle Church and moderator of the community-in-formation for the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in the Archdiocese of Washington. He also serves as Executive Director of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL).

All are invited to attend Wednesday evening’s Mass, which will be followed by a drinks reception in the parish hall. This Mass has been added to our seven-day schedule.
