Baltimore St. Alphonsus to welcome Fr. Kiefer at Sunday post-TLM social

A social will be held at the National Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Baltimore after the 11:30 am Traditional Latin Mass this coming Sunday, August 6, to welcome new pastor Reverend Father Joel Kiefer to the parish. Father Kiefer, a member of the Priestly Society of St. Peter, assumed pastoral duties at the Shrine this past Tuesday, August 1, succeeding interim administrator Reverend Father William Spacek of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

The Shrine, located at 114 West Saratoga Street in downtown Baltimore, now offers the Traditional Latin Mass every Sunday at 11:30 am and every weekday at 7:00 am. These Masses are listed on our seven-day schedule.

Baltimore St. Alphonsus sets patronal feast TLM for Wednesday evening 8/2

In observance of the feast day of the parish’s patron saint, a Traditional Latin Mass will be offered at 7:00 pm this Wednesday evening, August 2, at the National Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Baltimore. Reverend Father Joel Kiefer fssp, St. Alphonsus’ newly installed pastor, will be the celebrant of the Mass, which has been added to our seven-day schedule.

A visit to any church on its patronal feast day, accompanied by the recitation of one Our Father and the Creed, is enriched with a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions.

Daily Traditional Mass to begin Tuesday at Baltimore St. Alphonsus

Beginning this Tuesday, August 1, the regularly scheduled 7:00 am Mass at the National Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Baltimore will be a Traditional Latin Low Mass. The introduction of the TLM at the weekday morning Mass was announced this morning by Reverend Father William Spacek, whose term as interim parish administrator ends July 31.

The 7:00 am Traditional Mass will be offered by incoming pastor Reverend Father Joel Kiefer of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. For the time being, it is anticipated that the regularly scheduled 12:10 pm weekday Mass will continue to be an English Novus Ordo offered by a priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Also, the faithful are reminded that this Wednesday, August 2, is the Feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori, the parish’s patron. Fr. Kiefer FSSP to become pastor of Baltimore St. Alphonsus

Parish to remain under diocesan jurisdiction

It was announced today that Reverend Father Joel Kiefer of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP) will become the pastor of the National Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Baltimore effective August 1, 2017. The announcement was made during Holy Mass at St. Alphonsus on Sunday morning, July 9, by Reverend Father William Spacek, who will remain as parochial administrator for the remainder of the month of July.

The appointment of Fr. Kiefer ensures that Baltimore Catholics will continue to have permanent access to the Traditional Mass and Sacraments at St. Alphonsus after the retirement earlier this year of Reverend Monsignor Arthur Bastress. In addition, a priest will be appointed to offer the Novus Ordo Mass to the English- and Lithuanian-speaking parishioners of St. Alphonsus. The parish will remain within the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Fr. Kiefer, a 1992 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, previously served as pastor of the Fraternity’s North American Martyrs parish in Seattle.

February 3 TLM moved to evening at Baltimore St. Alphonsus

The National Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Baltimore announces that its regular Wednesday Traditional Latin Mass on February 3 has been rescheduled from 12:10 pm to 7:00 pm. In observance of the feast of St. Blase, throats will be blessed. This change has been posted to our seven-day schedule.

Baltimore St. Alphonsus sets morning Traditional Mass, devotions for July 4

At 10:00 am on Saturday, July 4, the Traditional Latin Mass will be offered by Reverend Monsignor Arthur Bastress at the National Shrine of St. Alphonsus Liguori, 114 W. Saratoga Street, Baltimore.

Because of the observance of Independence Day, Saturday morning’s Mass will be the only Mass offered that day at St. Alphonsus. Mass will be followed by the First Saturday devotions of the Holy Rosary, Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Free on-street parking will be available all day.

UPDATED: Msgr. Bastress in hospital; Baltimore St. Alphonsus schedule adjusted

We are informed that Reverend Monsignor Arthur Bastress, pastor of St. Alphonsus Church in downtown Baltimore, has recently been admitted to hospital where he is recovering from a respiratory ailment.  UPDATE 1: As of Friday, January 30, Msgr. Bastress has been moved to a regular patient room at Mercy Hospital.

There will be no Traditional Latin Mass on Friday at St. Alphonsus. Saturday’s Traditional Mass at 12:10 pm will be offered by Reverend Father Salvatore Furnari SAC. UPDATE 2: Sunday’s High Mass at 11:30 am will be celebrated by Reverend Father Marc Lanoue.

Msgr. Bastress’ illness alters Mass schedule at Baltimore St. Alphonsus

In an email note from a kind reader, we are informed that Monsignor Arthur Bastress, 87, pastor of St. Alphonsus Church in Baltimore, has been a patient at Baltimore’s Mercy Hospital since Sunday afternoon suffering from infections in his left wrist and elbow, which may require surgery.

We ask that, in your charity, you pray for Msgr. Bastress’ full recovery to health of body and soul.

There will be no Friday Traditional Latin Mass at St. Alphonsus on October 31.  Traditional Masses for the November feasts and the 21st Sunday of Pentecost will be offered as scheduled, including an All Souls’ Day Mass at 7:00 pm.  Readers are advised to phone the parish office at 410-685-6090 for information about future Masses; information received at our website will be passed along as it becomes available.

Baltimore St. Alphonsus posts Triduum TLM times

The website of St. Alphonsus Church, Baltimore, has posted the times for three Traditional Latin Masses to be celebrated during the Easter Triduum.

On Holy Thursday, April 17, High Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, April 19, the Mass of the Easter Vigil will be offered at 7:00 p.m.  High Mass of Easter will be celebrated Sunday, April 20, at 11:30 a.m.
